The mentality in most churches today is, “this will never happen to us.” This type of mentality is the biggest obstacle that you as a church must overcome. You must always keep in mind that it can happen to your church.
It is human nature to wait and see if something bad happens, but in the world that we live in today, churches have been devastated by violence, Pastor(s) and members are being injured and killed. This unthinkable act of violence is occurring on a regular basis. What was once unthinkable—entering a place of worship to do physical harm—has occurred several times over the past two years, most recently on March 8, 2009. Violence in places of worship is on the rise, and this violence has forced the topic of safety and security in the church to the forefront of Executive Protection / Executive Protection Training / Bodyguard and Personal Protection. According to at least one Christian Security Network, crimes in and around places of worship are an everyday occurrence. The sad reality is that, over seventy-five (75) percent of churches polled said, “They have no security or emergency plans in place.”
